Three cheers to the jury that stuck it to the Westboro Baptist Church for their despicable actions in protesting at the funeral services of America's honored dead.
You can hate homosexuals. You can hate the war in Iraq. You can hate George Bush. You can even hate America. But none of these justifies the actions of this group of people. The funeral of a beloved family member is one of the hardest things we do in life, especially if it's a child, and families do not deserve any more pain than they are already suffering.
I visited The Westboro Baptist Church Home Page and have never seen anything so vile in my life. Satan-worshipping atheists are probably more Christian than these "Christians" claim to be.
The first thing that greets you is "God Hates Fags", which is simply not true. The Westboro people love to spout John 3:16, but obviously have no understanding of its meaning.
"For God so loved that world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
That's a two-part verse. The first part states that God loved us so much that He gave His Son as a lasting sacrifice for our sins. The second part states that eternal life is for those who believe in Him.
Simply put, Christians are taught that they must accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior in order to get to heaven. I know that a lot of people want to dispute that notion, and I'm sure that they do so because they want to do exactly as they please here on this earth but still go to heaven. I'm sure many more on banking on the last-minute, "You and me, God. Right." With more and more churches ignoring the Bible, it's not surprising that such thoughts are out there.
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." II Timothy 3:16
There it is. God loves the world and, contrary to the hate preached by Westboro, that means the homosexuals as well. If Matthew Shepard and Diane Whipple are in hell, then it has everything to do with their not accepting Christ and nothing to do with their sexual preferences.
The actions of the Westboro people are as removed from God and Christianity as the east is from the west. Here's hoping that more people file suit so that more verdicts are rendered so that, hopefully, these people will disappear from the public conversation.
