The speaker of the above quote, Gov. Ed Rendell (D), has come in for a fair amount of criticism for making that statement. I have no idea why. It's the truth, the simple God's honest truth. There are racists among us.
It's really quite ridiculous to say that the Clintons injected race into the race. Race and gender were present from the moment Obama and Clinton decided to run. Not talking about it doesn't mean it isn't there. Honestly, whichever one of them wins, do you think the headline isn't going to say, "First African-American Elected President", or "First Woman Elected President." Come on, you know that's going to be the headline.
There is precious little honesty in politics - if you actually believe what a person on the stump says, I don't want you to vote - and no one should be criticized for it.
