Why?

I read the following quote today:  "The Clinton campaign's late - and inconsistent - emphasis on Clinton's softer side reflects a staff that has been at war with itself over how to present her . . ."  (Emphasis mine)

How to present her?  Why does she need to be packaged for public consumption?  Why not just let her be her?

Well, because she has been in our face for 16 very long years now and a lot of people don't like what they see. I saw the look she shot then Rep. Dick Armey when he said something about reports of her intelligence being understated but reports of her charm being overstated, or something like that.  If looks could kill, Mr. Armey would have been gone these many years.

When she trotted out her program to "reform" our health care system, she was asked a question about how struggling businesses were going to pay for it.  She said something to the effect that she couldn't be responsible for every "undercapitalized" business.  Then, of course, there was the summary firing of the entire White House travel office, the raw FBI files that were being pawed over by some bouncer she had hired, the seemingly endless parade of "I don't remember", "I don't recall", or some variation thereof, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I read recently that one of the things the public doesn't know about her is that she is a woman of faith.  Maybe we don't know this about her because we haven't seen it in her life, her attempt to beatify herself by saying that her forgiveness of Bill was comparable to Jesus' forgiveness of Peter, notwithstanding.

Then, of course, there's that old standby quote that she's much warmer in person than she appears on TV.  Then, why haven't we seen it more often?  As often as we've seen her, you think this warmth would have popped up now and again.

By the way, what's with the recent statement that she's finally found her voice?  What have we been listening to for all these years? If she only just now has discovered what she wants to say, it's kinda hard to believe her when she says she's ready to be President on "day one."

Why is it necessary to "present" her to the public, because the real deal ain't pretty and they know it.  It's not for nothing that Barbara Olson entitled her book "Hell to Pay:  The Unfolding Story of Hillary Rodham Clinton."
