Read any newspaper, America is headed for a recession. And for the more pessimistic, a depression. High prices for food and gas. The sub-prime mess. The credit squeeze, which might be the same thing as the sub-prime mess, but I'm not sure.
So, what do I read today? The House wants to boost funding for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief from $30 billion to $50 billion. That's right folks, billion with a bold capital "B". Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) said, "We have a moral imperative to act, and to act decisively."
He couldn't be more wrong if he tried. America's first moral imperative is to America, and we shouldn't be giving one thin dime to anyone or anything when America is headed for a crisis. Americans who are losing their homes and losing their jobs don't give a rat's rear end about somebody in Africa getting AIDS. And, quite frankly, neither do a lot of people who are doing quite well. And that's just a fact.
So the way I see it is that: (1) America isn't headed for an economic crisis; or (2) America is headed for an economic crisis and Congress is: (1) too stoopid to see it; (2) doesn't feel the need to do anything about it; and/or (3) doesn't care one way or the other.
And, let's not forget, the House invited oil execs to come on up to Capitol Hill to explain the high cost of gas. Nothing like sitting around in a circle pointing fingers.
Several members of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming urged the companies to invest more in biofuels, wind and solar power, and other renewable energy sources. According to what I've read on the anthropogenic global warming "crisis", biofuels actually make it worse. So, what we have here is: (1) a body that knows there's a global warming crisis and is actually encouraging people to make it worse; (2) a body that knows there's not a global warming crisis but wants to tax us anyway in order to "fix" it; and/or (3) doesn't care one way or the other.
And, let's not lose sight of the fact that producing biofuels increases the price of food, which is putting a strain on the economy. This is the clearest sign of the utter cluelessness in DC. The House is actually demanding that oil companies do something that will strain the economy.
For those who are leading us to rack and ruin, I guess all that matters is that they look good on camera. We truly do live in a world gone mad.
