A funny thing happened to Obama on his way to being crowned King of the World, his poll numbers have gone down. He is no longer leading McCain by comfortable margins. Some polls have him dead even. While those of us who care about the future of our country are taking some comfort in these findings, we know that polls can swing widely and wildly from day to day and are often indicators of nothing more than the slant of the outfit doing the polling. We do know, however, that the polls of "likely" voters are much more accurate indicators than are polls of "registered" voters.
Americans know that there was something unseemly about Obama's trip to Europe, even though some would never dream of saying so out loud. We felt uncomfortable watching the network anchors trail after him, knowing that McCain had not received the same treatment. We don't like the media telling us how we should feel about things. We didn't like hearing him say that he was a "citizen of the world". We would rather be Americans. We don't really care whether Germany or France or England likes Obama. In fact, probably one of the quickest ways to alienate America voters is to constantly tell them how much Europe loves Obama. Worse yet, constantly tell them how much Obama loves Europe.
America began because the people who came here didn't like the way things were done in Europe. America threw off the shackles of England when its rules no longer suited us. America fought against itself to save itself. America bloodily defeated tyrants, quietly defeated communism, and is once again bloodily defeating those who would be tyrants. We do this to save America. Granted, other countries benefit from our actions, but we do what we do for America. We know that America is the hope of the world. We also know that the rest of the world knows it, too. And the world knows that we know that it knows. So, the adults among us don't give much credence to their anti-American drivel.
We don't want to pay as much for a gallon of gas as Europeans. We find nothing noble in it. We don't want socialized health care. We like speaking English and think more nations should speak it. After all, if it wasn't for us, they wouldn't be free. And, come next Friday, Americans are going to be rooting for Americans to bring home the gold. Our only interest in European countries will be in how far behind us they are in the medal count. And, we want a president who thinks along the same lines.
The mob is always fickle. What they love one day, is yesterday's news the next.
Obama would do well to remember the story of the real Messiah, who was tried, convicted, and crucified shortly after his triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
