Democrats like to say that they are the mainstream. They are in touch with Everyman. They know what's going on. They also like to paint Republicans as clueless. It's amazing how people who are so self-absorbed can be so self-unaware at the same time. I guess that's what happens when you live in the echo chamber of your own ego.
Take God. Most Americans believe in Him. Yet there are the democrats, doing their best to see that He is removed from the public discourse.
Then, there are guns. They're very popular. So popular, in fact, that several states have concealed carry permits. Yet, democrats think they should be outlawed.
And, of course, there's oil. Most Americans want us to start drilling for our own. But once again, there are the democrats, pooh-poohing the notion. The Speaker of the House doesn't think that drilling will bring the price down, but that releasing a four-day supply from the SPR will. Let's not forget the democrat front man who thinks that inflating our tires will decrease the need for oil. It may be just me, but I am willing to bet that before he takes off in his fancy new plane, he makes sure there's gas in the tank before he asks about the air in the tires. Ya think?
Let's talk marriage. Most people think that marriage should be between one man and one woman, but here comes the democrat head-shaking again. They're already on record as being against the Defense of Marriage Act. Is gay marriage the only thing they're in favor of, or is there nothing they won't countenance?
How about the military? Most Americans look at the military as the one thing that stands between us and doom. We respect not only the men and women who serve, but the institution itself. The democrats, however, have nothing but contempt for the military. To them, it's a laboratory for social experimentation. The latest quest: gays in the military. At a recent hearing on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the House, no one from the Defense Department testified. Why? The democrats didn't invite anyone. Why? Because they don't want anyone in the know interferring with their agenda.
Partial birth abortion. This heinous procedure makes pretty much everyone who hears about it recoil in horror. I would venture to guess that most people want abortion legal but also want it used sparingly. Not the democrats. Abortion at any time, for any reason.
The war in Iraq. Most Americans want it over, but they don't want to lose it. Democrats want it over, even if they have to lose it.
Taxes! Most Americans don't like taxes but accept them as a necessary evil. Democrats can't impose new ones, or raise old ones, fast enough. And almost without exception, democrats think that every problem can be solved by raising taxes. Maybe if they raise them high enough, people will have had enough and will do away with democrats. At least one problem solved.
Considering that democrats are diametrically opposed to mainstream America on every important issue of the day, how are they the majority in Congress? How is Obama ahead of McCain?
