Athlete Extraordinaire Michael Phelps, who is crashing Olympic and world records right and left. In just one short week, he first tied and then exceeded the record for the most gold medals ever won by an athlete, breaking a 4-way tie for that record. He now stands alone with 13 gold medals and has a chance to win his 14th.
In winning his first 5 gold medals at the Beijing Games, he set 5 world records. And in winning the 100 m. butterfly, he won his 7th gold medal, tying the record of Mark Spitz for most gold medals in one olympiad, a record that had stood for 36 years. If he takes gold in his last event, he will stand alone at 8.
