Under the principle of "universal justice," which it came up with itself, Spain has decided that any "grave" crime committed by any person anywhere in the world can be prosecuted in Spain. Pursuant to a lawsuit filed by some human rights lawyers, Spain is looking into whether or not it will prosecute some officials of the Bush administration, including former United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, for the "torture" of terrorist detainees.
Arrogance doesn't come any more breathtaking than this. Even BO's swelled head pales in comparison, and that's saying something. What about the principle of sovereignity? Did someone appoint Spain king of the world when I wasn't looking?
We should all be extremely alarmed by the response of current Attorney General Eric Holder, who said: "Obviously, we would look at any request that would come from a court in any country and see how and whether we should comply with it. This is an administration that is determined to conduct itself by the rule of law, and to the extent that we receive lawful requests from an appropriately created court, we would obviously respond to it". (Emphasis mine) Any request from any country? Really?
His response should have been to tell the Spanish judge what he could do to himself. By not doing so, he's saying that America is amenable to allowing a United States citizen to be tried by some kangaroo court in a foreign country. And yes, it will be a kangaroo court, don't doubt that for one minute.
This is a dream come true for this administration. It can prosecute the former adminstration without ever getting its own hands dirty. Just allow these individuals to be extradited so Spain can do it. Does BO expect that American citizens will just sit by and say nothing? When the hue and cry arises, as it will, will he just schedule a primetime TV appearance to say: There's nothing we can do. Our hands are tied. We must respect the rule of law.
This should show you once and for all that BO has no plans of ever leaving the White House. Why? Because if he knew that he would be out in four (please God!) or eight years, he would never put into place a policy of prosecuting former administration officials for fear that it would some day come back to bite him.
