Picking up where Steny Hoyer left off, Sen. Patrick Leady (D-VT) - who, you will remember, once breached national security by giving documents to a magazine to publish - said that, of course, congress has authority to force Americans to purchase health insurance. Here's the play-by-play:
Reporter: "Where, in your opinion, does the Constitution give specific autority for congress to give an individual mandate for health insurance?"
Leahy: "We have plenty of authority. Are you saying there is no authority?"
Reporter: "I'm asking . . ."
Leahy: "Why would you say there is no authority? I mean, there's no question there's authority. Nobody questions that."
Don't look now, Mr. Leahy, but someone was just questioning your authority to do what you intend to do. Weren't you listening?
Probably not. Haven't done so before. No need to start now.
