That's the position of big 'D' democrats on yesterday's elections, and they're sticking to it. These elections were so meaningless, in fact, that Obama didn't even watch the results. Yea, right. He didn't know about the tea parties, either. (If you believe either of these statements, give me a call. I've got a bridge I'm trying to sell.)
We all know that if Corzine (NJ) and Deeds (VA) had won, there would have been no end to the spin. These elections would have been called a resounding endorsement of Obama and all he is trying to accomplish. But, they lost, so, ho-hum. No biggie.
Psst . . . all you mouthpieces might want to stop spinning and pay attention. Independents, who went left in 2008, went right last night - in droves. There were three elections in Virginia - governor, lt. governor, attorney general - and the Republicans simply crushed the democrats in all three. When McDonnell (R-winner) last faced Deeds (D-loser), it was for attorney general. McDonnell beat Deeds by 323 votes. The margin last night - 320,000.
Even in New York, where the democrat won, here's the breakdown: Owens (D): 49%. Hoffman (an admitted conservative, Ronald Reagan Republican): 46%. Scozzafava (moderate R): 6%. What do you get when you add these numbers up? Democrat: 49%, Republican: 52%.
Some commentator, before all of the results were even in, said that the 1900-page health care bill in the House was now "pulp". Harry Reid came forward to say that there might not be any vote on health care "reform" before the end of the year. Sorry, Obama.
There were other elections as well. Maine became the 31st consecutive state to say NO to gay marriage. Recently-elected democrats in the various states that were holding election, saw their districts, which went for Obama in 2008, go Republican.
Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life democrat (yes, there are some) from Michigan has stated that he has 40-plus democrats who will not vote for any health care bill that includes federal funding for abortion. If all Republicans join with these democrats (a BIG if), any bill will be defeated. Think he might have even more this morning? (As an aside, cap-and-tax doesn't appear to be going anywhere, either.)
Gallup has just released a poll showing that Republicans would take back the House if elections were held now and not 2010. Unemployment is expected to remain high, which means next year at this time there are going to be a lot of people who have used up their unemployment benefits.
Also in the Gallup poll was this little tidbit: Obama's approval rating is down to 50%, which is one point lower than it was last week.
Bottom line is this: those in office want to stay in office. If that means that democrats have to desert Obama, Reid, and Pelosi, they will do so. And, even Reid and Pelosi will desert Obama if they have to.
Which just proves the old adage: if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.
