Michael Copps, an FCC commissioner with definite leftist leanings, thinks that the government should create new regulations to promote diversity in news programming. He believes that broadcasters should be subject to a "public values test" every four years. In order to keep their licenses, broadcasters would have to:
1. Prove they have made a meaningful commitment to public affairs and news programming.
Who gets to decide what is "meaningful"?
2. Prove they are committed to diversity programming.
Who gets to decide how "committed" they are?
3. Report more to the government about which shows they plan to air.
Report or ask permission?
4. Require greater disclosure about who funds political ads.
Who gets to decide what is the right amount of disclosure?
5. Devote 25% of their prime-time coverage to local news.
Forget about the shows that actually bring in the money?
If you think this administration is about anything other than power - getting it, keeping it, using it - over all aspects of our lives, you aren't paying attention.
