I attended a high school graduation last week, and I must say that I was appalled at the behavior of the guests. Each time a name was called, people began yelling and clapping, sometimes there were air horns and sometimes there were cowbells and sometimes there were all four. Because there were 400 students to get through, the names were rattled off. With all the noise, it was difficult to hear the next name. If we hadn't seen her standing there, we would have missed the name of the gal we had come to see.
You know, we had traveled 3-1/2 hours to see this graduation, and I'm
sure we weren't the only ones. There were parents and siblings and
grandparents who had all come there to see someone they love graduate
from high school. Why couldn't they applaud politely and quietly when
they heard the name of their graduate? What was the necessity behind
all the noise? Why did it never occur to any of them that their
graduate was not the only one and that their unnecessary noise made it
difficult for others to hear? Are they of the belief that making
more noise indicates that they loved their graduate any more than those
of us who sat quietly while the names were called? The young man in
front of me finally had to be told to sit down. Apparently, it never
occurred to him that standing up blocked the view of those behind him.
What happened to good manners?
