Another member of The Greatest Generation has passed on. My uncle, Dawson C. Pope, passed away at the ripe young age of 92.
Uncle Dawson was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When his youngest son, who made the Navy his home, tried to get his Pearl Harbor Survivor medal, he discovered that there had been a fire at the base where the records were stored. Not willing to give up, it was discovered that Dawson's mother had kept all of the letters he had written her . . . including the envelopes. Thanks to the postal stamp on at least one of those envelopes, my cousin was able to get his father his Pearl Harbor Survivor medal.
Uncle Dawson leaves behind his wife of 62 years, my wonderful Aunt Lela, along with 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
Go in peace.
