The Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5

Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down His disciples came to Him.  And He opened His mouth and taught them.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.  Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.  (The Beatitudes)

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored?  It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.

You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hid.  Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.  For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.  Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment."  But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says "You fool!" shall be liable to the hell of fire.  So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

You have heard that it was said, "You shall not commit adultery."  But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better than you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

It was also said, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce."  But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn."  But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is His footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  Let what you say be simply "Yes" or "No"; anything more than this comes from evil.

You have heard it said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."  But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil.  But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy." But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  For if you love those who love you, what reward have you?  Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others?  Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Nope, nothing about homosexual unions.  Maybe next chapter.

We're Not Getting What We Pay For

A few years back I remember reading about a health care facility that was having to contact it's current and former patients to advise them that they might have contracted hepatitis.  How?  It seems that the medical personnel were not sterilizing the colonoscopy instrument between patients.

Let that sink in for a  moment.

Now, comes word that a clinic in Vegas is being shut down over hepatitis concerns.  Seems that the medical personnel were reusing syringes and vials of medication.  Got to save money, you know.  Hepatitis could be the least of these people's concerns.  What about HIV/AIDS?

The dirty little secret that nobody's telling us, though, is that making people sicker is the best and most efficient way to make more money.  If I go into the hospital for come-and-go surgery, the hospital makes a certain amount of money.  If I get an infection, especially a bad one, however, then I've got to stay longer and the hospital can bill the insurance company for more money.  Give people hepatitis, and they've got to seek treatment, maybe for the rest of their lives.  What a bonanza!

Get people on medication and keep them hooked on it, and they'll be coming to you until they croak.  My gosh, have you ever seen such easy money!

Here's the bottom line:  There's no money in good health, and the medical profession has no interest whatsoever in keeping you in good health.  Their only interest is in making sure that you come and see them as often as you can.

For this reason, paying for health care will soon be out of reach for the average citizen of this country.  Business will not be able to continue shouldering all or most of the load.  People paying for their own insurance will cease to exist because there comes a time when you just have to say that you can't do it anymore.  If it's a choice between the house payment and the medical insurance payment, medical insurance is going to lose every time.

Insurance companies are completely dependent on premiums.  If everyone stopped paying premiums, they would be broke and out of business.  You would think, wouldn't you, that they would start be nicer to us.  That is not the case however.  It seems that common sense in the insurance industry is nonexistent.  Instead of making insurance affordable, so that more people would buy it, they just keep making it more and more unaffordable and blaming everyone but themselves.

Here's another dirty little secret:  America already has socialized medicine.  It's being run by the insurance industry.  Treatment is being rationed.  Medicine is being rationed.  As is apparent from the above examples, there is nothing that is not being rationed.

We're paying more and more and getting less and less.  That clinic in Vegas should be shut down and all medical personnel - doctors right through nurses - should be stripped of their licenses to dispense health care.  The directors of the clinic should be forbidden from just going somewhere else and opening a new one.

Private insurance should follow the example of Medicare:  the facility cannot bill Medicare for its own negligence.  In other words, if the hospital gives me an infection, the hospital cannot bill Medicare for treating that infection.  Instead of the sky being the limit, the negligent facilities are going to have to eat the costs all on their own.  When and if that becomes the standard throughout this country, the cost of health care will go down, as will incidences of medical malpractice.

We tend to be a little more careful about the spending of money when it comes from our own pocket.

The Woman's Lost Her Mind

Last night on the Fox News channel I saw Hillary Clinton's latest ad.  Continuing her theme that she's the most experienced and the only one ready to take charge on "Day One," the voiceover said that she had been "tested."  The clear and obvious intent of this is to connote to viewers that, somehow, she is battled tested and ready to be President of the United States, Commander in Chief, Leader of the Free World.  What has she been drinking?

This woman's only elective office is senator.  She has no executive experience.  She's never had to make the decisions that could mean life or death.  If she got woken up in the middle of the night by a call on the "red phone," it was because she was sleeping with the Governor or the President.  The call was never for her.  The only experience she has had in actually being in charge of something was the healthcare task force during her husband's administration.  This one and only foray into actual leadership was an unmitigated failure.

I surely can't be the first one to tell her that being an enabler for a philandering husband does not qualify her as "tested" and ready for the Oval Office.  Nor is she qualified because her husband held those offices.  She just has a closer view than most of us.

Here's a newsflash.  She is neither ready nor prepared to be President of the United States, neither is Barack Obama nor John McCain.  The only people who are are the people who have already been there and know what it's like.  And, quite frankly, I have my doubts about a couple of them.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

If Barack Obama is elected President, he could nominate at least one person to the United States Supreme Court.  Since there are several on the bench who have already overstayed their welcome, he could nominate more.

Apparently, this is what he has had to say on the subject:

" . . . when you look at what makes a great Supreme Court justice, it's not just the particular issue and how they rule, but it's their conception of the Court.  And part of the role of the Court  is that it is going to protect people who may be vulnerable in the political process, the outsider, the minority, those who are vulnerable, those who don't have a lot of clout . . ."

Further, "If we can find people who have life experience and they understand what it means to be on the outside, what it means to have the system not work for them, that's the kind of person I want on the Supreme Court."

And further, "We need somebody who's got the heart, the empathy, to recognize what it's like to be a young teenage mom.  The empathy to understand what it's like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old.  And that's the critera by which I'm going to be selecting my judges."

He couldn't be more wrong if he tried.  The purpose of a judge, any judge anywhere on any court, is NOT to protect people who may be vulnerable in the political process, but to apply the applicable law to the facts of the case and NOT be swayed by these outside factors that BO thinks are so important.

If the poor, the vulnerable, the outsider, the minority is in the wrong and the rich, the powerful, the insider, the majority is in the right, then judgment must be for the latter.  Judges who don't like the law can (1) work to change it, and/or (2) step down.  Judges who don't follow the law and won't step down should be removed.

If the law doesn't mean what it says, then it is no longer the law.  It becomes nothing more than meaningless words on a page that can be applied in any fashion, subject only to the whim of whoever reads them.  That's not law, that's chaos.

Oops!

While out stumping for his wife, Bill Clinton goofed,  "So Hillary says, in 2005, the United States Congress adopted the Bush-Cheney energy bill, which gave $27 billion in subsidies to nuclear, oil and gas and coal.  The only thing that was justified was clean coal, because countries are going to be using that.*  We have to figure out how to take the carbon dioxide out of it.  The rest of it is waste.  If you elect me, I'll repeal those subsidies and put them into a strategic energy fund that will create American jobs for America's future with clean energy.

Freudian slip or wishful thinking?
-------------------------

* Don't ever forget that Bill Clinton created the Grand Escalante National Park, thereby prohibiting America's use of the vast supply of coal there.  I always wondered what he got in exchange for doing that.

Why?

I read the following quote today:  "The Clinton campaign's late - and inconsistent - emphasis on Clinton's softer side reflects a staff that has been at war with itself over how to present her . . ."  (Emphasis mine)

How to present her?  Why does she need to be packaged for public consumption?  Why not just let her be her?

Well, because she has been in our face for 16 very long years now and a lot of people don't like what they see. I saw the look she shot then Rep. Dick Armey when he said something about reports of her intelligence being understated but reports of her charm being overstated, or something like that.  If looks could kill, Mr. Armey would have been gone these many years.

When she trotted out her program to "reform" our health care system, she was asked a question about how struggling businesses were going to pay for it.  She said something to the effect that she couldn't be responsible for every "undercapitalized" business.  Then, of course, there was the summary firing of the entire White House travel office, the raw FBI files that were being pawed over by some bouncer she had hired, the seemingly endless parade of "I don't remember", "I don't recall", or some variation thereof, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I read recently that one of the things the public doesn't know about her is that she is a woman of faith.  Maybe we don't know this about her because we haven't seen it in her life, her attempt to beatify herself by saying that her forgiveness of Bill was comparable to Jesus' forgiveness of Peter, notwithstanding.

Then, of course, there's that old standby quote that she's much warmer in person than she appears on TV.  Then, why haven't we seen it more often?  As often as we've seen her, you think this warmth would have popped up now and again.

By the way, what's with the recent statement that she's finally found her voice?  What have we been listening to for all these years? If she only just now has discovered what she wants to say, it's kinda hard to believe her when she says she's ready to be President on "day one."

Why is it necessary to "present" her to the public, because the real deal ain't pretty and they know it.  It's not for nothing that Barbara Olson entitled her book "Hell to Pay:  The Unfolding Story of Hillary Rodham Clinton."

Good One!

Who can forget the immortal words of Bill Clinton, "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky" or the even better "It depends on what the meaning of 'is' is".

In keeping with the tradition of ClintonSpeak, this is what one staffer had to say about the financial woes of Mrs. Clinton's campaign, "These are not true debts accruing by the campaign, but simply unpaid invoices."

The campaign doesn't have debts, it has unpaid invoices.  I'm so glad that has been cleared up.

Who says words don't mean anything.

Obamamania

Obamamania, I got it bad.
The man just makes me swoon!
That goofy grin, those Dumbo ears
just send me to the moon!

Who cares if he's an empty suit.
What matters is he's cool.
At the very thought of him
and I begin to drool.

I watch him on the TV set
and wish I could be there.
To cheer, to chant, perhaps to faint,
or maybe just to stare.

He'll save this country, yes he will,
I'm often heard to say.
I cannot wait until it's time
to cast my vote his way.

His persona is just so divine,
he nearly knocks me dead.
What's he stand for, I don't know,
don't think he's ever said.

Why Should It Matter?

In response to some pro-life protesters, Bill Clinton recently made the statement, "I reduced abortion."  Apparently, there were fewer abortions during his administration.  Why should it matter?

A number of those on the left have been heard to say that "abortion should be safe, legal, and rare."  Why?

The Left constantly tells that an abortion is nothing more than a woman's "right" to choose.  Nothing is happening except that some "cells" are being removed from the body.  Abortion at any time, for any reason.  What's wrong with that?

By saying that abortions should be rare and bragging about reducing them, the speaker is admitting, if only tacitly, that there's something wrong with abortion.

Loser of the Week

"Let me tell you something.  For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country."
     Michelle Obama

"They" are saying that her use of the word "really" modifies her comment.  She was proud before, but now she's really proud.  Give me a break.

This is a well-educated woman with a substantial vocabulary.  She could have, and should have, said:  "I've never been prouder of my country than I am right now."  But, she said what she meant to say.

Spin away.  We ain't buying it.

Conservative, I Think Not

I recently read a blog posting from someone who called himself a "conservative suicide voter" because he was not going to vote for John McCain.   I personally think this is stupid.  I'm sick to death of members of the Right saying first that they weren't going to vote for Giuliani and now aren't going to vote for McCain because he isn't conservative enough.  Okay, stay home.  That's your right.  But don't say word one when your missed vote gives us Clinton or Obama and all that will follow.  If you don't vote, you have no right to complain.

I have read this posting more than once, and the more I read it, the more I have come believe that this man isn't a conservative at all.  He's a liberal pretending to be a conservative hoping to talk people out of voting for McCain, as if there are some who need an excuse.

What gave him away?  "Applied critical thought might have led to a different result than Bush II . . . But enough conservatives skipped critical thought because the alternative seemed worse.  It was not."  (Emphasis mine)

1.  How does he know that enough conservatives skipped "critical thought."?  Did he do polling, conduct a survey?  He doesn't know my thinking.  He doesn't know why I did what I did.  It's highly unlikely that he knows what the vast majority of conservatives was thinking.  He has simply made an assumption and called it a fact.  A hallmark of the Left.

2.  Bush II's first opponent was Al Gore.  I find it inconceivable that there is a conservative alive who would say that Gore would not have been worse than Bush.  In fact, there are a heckuva lot of dimocrats who acknowledge that Gore would have been worse.  His near-maniacal ramblings concerning global warming are extremely worrisome.

3.  Bush II's second opponent was John Kerry, the two-time gigolo and war "hero" who demanded medals for boo-boos so he could come home early.  In a time of war, indeed at any time, America needs and deserves better than a man who cut and ran without so much as a second thought about who he was leaving behind.  Better them than him, I guess.

4.  "It was not."  (Emphasis mine)  The blogger didn't say, "It might not have been."  He definitively stated "It was not."  Since neither Gore nor Kerry was elected, it is impossible to say whether they would have been worse than Bush II.  Again, he has simply offered his opinion as fact.

People always give themselves away.

When It Suits Them

The rats are deserting the sinking ship.  When Hillary Clinton was "inevitable", everybody wanted to be on board The Good Ship Clinton, more for the political favors they hoped to obtain than for any love of her, I think.  With a vindictive streak wider than her bottom line and an enemies' list longer than Pi, I would think that there were also those who did so out of fear.

Well, the hull has sprung some leaks and many have heeded the call to "abandon ship".  The most recent being Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who said that he could "never, ever do anything to reverse the action" of his constituents.  Please!  The only time elected officials even think about what the voters of their district care about is when the voters' interest intersect with their own, and then usually only at election time.  Superdelegate Lewis also said that he plans to cast his vote for BO in the hopes of preventing a fight at the upcoming convention.  Again, please.  All this high-flying rhetoric is nothing more than a smokescreen, a cover for these people to do what they have probably wanted to do all along:  dump Hillary.

If she's not going to win, what's to suck up to or fear?

Clueless in America

We were told that the most recent suicide bombers in Iraq were two women with Down's Syndrome.  Now comes word that the head of the mental hospital that provided care for these women may have provided them to al qaeda for this purpose.  Why not.  It's not like they had any value.

This is what Best of the Web Today had to say about it:  "We are at a loss for words to characterize the depth of this evil."

Ditto.

Meanwhile, here in America, the grossly overpaid people who are supposed to be looking out for best interests are, instead, looking into steroid/HGH use in baseball.  Words fail me.

Those who are actually doing something that remotely resembles looking out for our best interests are either whining about waterboarding or debating amongst themselves about FISA.  Again, words fail me.

What is it going to take for these people to get a clue?  Will a mushroom cloud have to appear somewhere over a city?  Will gas or chemical WMD have to be used in a subway?  Will more planes have to be flown into more buildings?  What exactly is it going to take?

I've pretty much had it up to my eyeballs with the simps on both the Left and the Right who demand that we keep ourselves above the fray.  (Hello, we're already in the fray.)  Under no circumstances must we ever let go of our ideals.  We must always be this shining example to the world.  What a pile of hooey!

If I hear somebody breaking into my house in the middle of the night, I'm going to stand behind the door, in the dark, and whack the SOB over the head with a golf club.  I am not going to turn on the lights, confront him, and say "Let's play fair.  I've got my standards, after all."

All our ideals and all our standards won't be worth diddley if we cannot defeat these fanatics who spill blood just for the sheer joy of it.  NEWSFLASH.  Our Constitution won't be worth anything either.

What I want to hear from the nattering nabobs of nonsense on the Hill is that they're willing to do whatever is necessary to keep me safe.  As long as they keep wringing their hands over whether or not it's okay to actually hurt someone, or even - God forbid! - make them uncomfortable, the jihadists will continue to view us with disdain.  And, they'll keep coming, because they know we're not serious.

How much death and destruction will it take?

The Truth Is Not Racist

". . . I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate."

The speaker of the above quote, Gov. Ed Rendell (D), has come in for a fair amount of criticism for making that statement.  I have no idea why.  It's the truth, the simple God's honest truth.  There are racists among us.

It's really quite ridiculous to say that the Clintons injected race into the race.  Race and gender were present from the moment Obama and Clinton decided to run.  Not talking about it doesn't mean it isn't there.  Honestly, whichever one of them wins, do you think the headline isn't going to say, "First African-American Elected President", or "First Woman Elected President."  Come on, you know that's going to be the headline.

There is precious little honesty in politics - if you actually believe what a person on the stump says, I don't want you to vote - and no one should be criticized for it.

What Is She Thinking?

I am not as well informed as some.  I certainly have a lot less inside information than some.  But I've got good instincts, and I think we've already seen the beginning of Hillary Clinton imploding due to the stress of not being the "inevitable" candidate.

She is fighting for her political life at a time when she probably thought everything would already be settled in her favor.  Her plans to just cool her jets until November have come to naught.  Serious watchers of such things are voicing doubt not only about her nomination, but at least one has come right out and said that Barack Obama will be the nominee.

Why do I say she's starting to implode?  Because she brought Maggie Williams on board, that's why.

What on earth would possess her to bring back a woman who was at the epicenter of two of the more sensational Clinton scandals?  I refer, of course, to:

     1.  On the night of Vince Foster's death, Secret Service agents saw her removing documents from Mr. Foster's office; and

     2.  She took a $50,000 check from Johnny Chung, a leading figure in the fundraising illegalities, in the White House.

Has Mrs. Clinton forgotten this, or does she think we have?  Did she really think that she could just blithely resurrect Ms. Williams without consequence?  Did she really think that the "vast right wing conspiracy" would not comment on this?

At a time when she needs all the help she can get, why on earth would she want to do something that so forcibly reminds everyone of her and her husband's sordid past?  When are the Clintons going to get it through their collective head that pretending the past didn't happen won't change it?

To my way of thinking, this is not rational behavior.

If Hillary Clinton does ultimately get the nomination, which I think she will - by hook or by crook - she will come to power at an extremely dangerous time in history, courtesy of her husband, who was more interested in behaving like an adolescent than he was in dealing with terrorists.

We don't have the luxury of having a President who makes irrational decisions when things aren't going her way.
